Wash Fastness & Durability

How to Mix & Use Matsui Silicone Catalyst

Step 1 — Use Clean Equipment Only

Any contamination from plastisol, water-based, or discharge inks in mixing vessels or on mixing blades will compromise the silicone system. Use dedicated, clean tools for all Yama silicone mixing. Never share equipment between silicone and other ink systems.

Step 2 — Stir Silicone Base Thoroughly

Silicone inks can settle during storage. Thoroughly stir the base ink before adding catalyst to ensure uniform distribution of silicone solids. A poorly mixed base will result in inconsistent color, finish, and performance.

Step 3 — Add Silicone Catalyst at the Correct Ratio

Add Silicone Catalyst to the Yama ink at the ratio specified by Matsui for that particular ink. Measure by weight for accuracy. Do not estimate or over-add. Over-catalyzing reduces pot life and can cause screen blockage and print defects.

Step 4 — Mix Thoroughly

Blend catalyst and ink completely until fully uniform. An incompletely mixed catalyst will result in inconsistent cure across the print.

Step 5 — Label Mixed Ink with Time

Immediately write the time of mixing on the container. Pot life is approximately 4–6 hours. Any mixed ink remaining after pot life has expired must be discarded — it will not perform correctly even if it hasn’t fully gelled.

Step 6 — Mix Only What You Need

Do not pre-mix large quantities of catalyzed ink. Calculate your approximate ink usage for the run and mix that amount plus a reasonable buffer. Un-used catalyzed ink cannot be reverted to un-catalyzed state and must be discarded at pot life.

Step 7 — Keep Screens Flooded

Silicone ink will dry in the screen faster than water-based inks during production pauses. Keep screens flooded between prints. If stopping for more than a few minutes, clean the screen with the appropriate silicone ink cleaner.

Run the print through the conveyor dryer at 300–320°F (150–160°C) for 1–2 minutes. Silicone reflects IR heat — use a slower belt speed than you would for plastisol. Use a heat probe or donut probe to confirm ink film temperature exceeds 250°F (121°C) internally.

Step 9 — Perform Stretch & Wash Tests

Before approving a production run, perform a stretch test on a sample print to confirm full cure. A fully cured silicone print will stretch without cracking or lifting. Perform a wash test on production samples to confirm wash fastness meets specification.
