How to Wash Test Plastisol Prints
Whenever you change ink, mesh count, dryer settings, or substrate — run a wash test before releasing production. This is the only definitive check for cure and wash durability.
Step 1 — Cure a Test Print
Print and cure a test garment at your production dryer settings. Let cool completely before washing.
Step 2 — Wash Hot
Machine wash on the hottest setting with standard detergent. Hot water is the stress test — if it holds here, it holds everywhere.
Step 3 — Repeat 3–5 Cycles
Run 3–5 full wash/dry cycles. Under-cured prints fail in the first 1–3 washes. Properly cured prints show no change.
Step 4 — Inspect
Look for cracking, peeling, delamination, or color change. A properly cured metallic print retains its shine and adhesion. Do a stretch test — pull the print firmly and check for cracking.
If metallic prints dull or lose sheen after washing: This is almost always under-cure. Check actual garment surface temperature with a donut probe or temp tape — not dryer air temp. Increase dwell time before re-testing.
Stir Thoroughly Before Each Use
Metallic particles settle in the container during storage and between press runs. Always stir from the bottom before printing and re-stir if the run pauses for more than 15–20 minutes.
Do Not Over-Reduce
Adding viscosity reducers or extenders to metallic inks can compromise the metallic particle suspension and reduce sheen. Use as close to unmodified as possible for best metallic performance.

Do I need an underbase when printing Metallic Gold on dark garments?
It depends on the opacity requirement. Inktek Metallic Gold has reasonable opacity and can often print directly on dark garments without an underbase. For maximum brightness on black or very dark colors, a white or light-colored underbase will significantly increase the apparent brightness of the gold. Test on the specific garment and color before committing to a production workflow.
Why does my metallic gold print look dull after washing?
Dull metallic prints after washing are almost always under-cure. The metallic particles need to be fully encapsulated in the cured plastisol film for the sheen to be durable. Check your dryer temperature with a donut probe or temp tape on the actual garment surface. Increase dwell time and re-test. Metallic inks can require slightly more dwell time than standard plastisol due to the reflective particle surface interfering with heat absorption.
Can I mix Metallic Gold with other Inktek inks?
Yes — you can mix Metallic Gold with Metallic Silver to create intermediate metallic tones (champagne, antique gold). You can also mix small amounts of standard LB colors into Metallic Gold to shift the hue. However, adding non-metallic plastisols in large amounts will reduce the metallic sheen. Keep pigmented additions minimal for best metallic results.
What mesh count should I use?
86–110 mesh is the standard range for metallic inks. This deposits enough ink to create a full, opaque metallic surface. Higher mesh counts (160+) can be used for finer detail work but will produce a thinner ink deposit with less intense sheen. For maximum gold brightness, use 86 mesh. For detailed graphic elements, 110 mesh balances detail and coverage.
How do I store Metallic Gold ink?
Store at room temperature in the sealed container. Avoid freezing (damages plastisol binder) and prolonged exposure to temperatures above 100°F (accelerates aging). Metallic particles will settle over time — this is normal. Stir thoroughly before each use. Properly stored, Inktek plastisol inks have a shelf life of approximately 2 years from the manufacturing date.
