DTF Powder: The Bond That Makes the Transfer

Without quality adhesive powder, even the best DTF ink and film combination will fail to bond properly to garments or peel prematurely in the wash. The powder is not an afterthought — it IS the adhesive. CCI’s custom-blended TPU formula is engineered to melt at the correct temperature, flow into fabric fiber structure, and cure into a flexible, permanent bond that stretches, washes, and performs like screen-printed transfers.

How DTF Powder Works

Print on film. DTF printer lays down CMYK + White ink onto the film. The ink is still wet and tacky at this point.

Apply powder. While ink is wet, apply CCI DTF powder — either with a powder shaker or by hand. The powder sticks only where wet ink is present.

Shake off excess. Gently tap or shake the film to remove any powder that didn’t bond to the ink. Clean powder removal = clean transfer edges.

Cure under heat. Pass the powdered film through an IR curing oven or curing section. The TPU powder melts into a smooth, tacky adhesive layer bonded to the ink.

Heat press onto garment. Place transfer ink-side down on the garment. Press at 300–320°F for 12–15 seconds with medium-firm pressure. Peel cold for maximum bond strength.

Critical Tip:
The quality of your powder application directly determines wash durability. Too little powder = poor adhesion. Too much un-shaken powder = cloudy or textured transfer edges. Aim for even, moderate coverage and shake off all excess before curing.
Safety — Read First:
Always wear a mask (N95 or better), gloves, and safety glasses when handling DTF powder. NEVER apply powder near or on the printer — fine airborne particles can damage print electronics and clog intake fans. Work in a well-ventilated area or use an enclosed powder shaker with filtration.

What is DTF powder made of and why does it matter?

DTF adhesive powder is a hot-melt thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) compound. When heated, it melts and flows into the fabric fiber structure, then re-solidifies as a flexible adhesive layer. The quality of the TPU compound determines the bond strength, wash durability, and stretch performance of the finished transfer. CCI’s custom-blended formula is engineered specifically for DTF printing — not a repurposed generic hot-melt.

Do I need white powder or black powder?

White powder is standard for virtually all DTF applications — it melts clear and becomes invisible under the transfer. Black powder is available for specific applications where white powder might be visible through very thin or sheer dark fabrics, or for specialty dark-on-dark effects. For most shops, white powder covers 95%+ of jobs.

How do I apply the powder without making a mess?

The cleanest method is an automated powder shaker like the STS S-20 — it applies, shakes off excess, and filters airborne particles in one enclosed system. For manual application, work over a containment tray, apply powder liberally over the wet film, then tilt and tap gently to shake off excess back into the tray for reuse. Never apply powder over the printer.

What temperature cures CCI DTF powder?

CCI DTF powder typically cures at approximately 135–165°C (275–330°F) depending on dwell time and conveyor speed. When using a curing oven or the S-20 shaker, aim for a setting that melts the powder into a smooth, even, tacky layer without scorching the ink. Always run test strips when dialing in a new powder lot.

Can unused powder be reclaimed and reused?

Yes — powder that falls off the film and is collected in a clean tray can be reused as long as it has not been exposed to heat, moisture, or contamination. Store reclaimed powder in a sealed container in a cool, dry location. Discard any powder that has clumped or partially melted.

How much powder do I need per transfer?

Coverage varies significantly by design size and ink density. A rough estimate for a full 12×12″ CMYK + white print is approximately 5–10 grams of powder per transfer. A 1 kg bag covers roughly 100–200 full-size transfers depending on coverage. Gang sheets with many small designs use powder more efficiently.
