Every DTF transfer requires adhesive TPU powder applied after printing and before curing. On a desktop printer, hand-shaking powder is manageable. On a 24″ production printer printing at 188 ft²/hr, it’s a bottleneck — and a health hazard. The STS S-20 eliminates the hand-dusting step entirely, delivering uniform powder coverage, consistent IR melt temperatures, and safe filtered exhaust — so your production line keeps moving and your operators stay protected.

S-20 Core Features

✅ Dual Top + Bottom Infrared Heating

Most powder shakers use a single top IR element. The S-20 uses both top and bottom infrared heating to ensure complete, even powder melt across the full film width — eliminating cold spots that cause adhesion failure or transfer peeling in the wash.

DTF Powder Process: Step-by-Step

Print — XPD-924D prints the CMYK + White design onto DTF film. Ink is still wet at this stage.

Powder — S-20 applies TPU hot-melt adhesive powder to the wet ink surface. Powder adheres only where ink is present.

Shake & Clear — S-20 shakes off excess powder, leaving only the ink-bonded layer. Excess powder is collected for reuse.

Cure — Top + bottom IR heating melts the powder into a smooth, tacky adhesive film — the bond layer for heat press application.

Press — Cured transfer is applied to garment with heat press at 300–320°F for 12–15 seconds. Peel cold for best results.

Do I need a powder shaker, or can I apply powder by hand?

For a 13″ desktop DTF printer doing low volume, hand-shaking is workable. For the STS XPD-924D running at 22–29 linear feet per hour, manual powder application is a production-killing bottleneck and a health hazard. The S-20 is the right tool for any 24″ production DTF setup.

Does the S-20 include its own curing/melt function, or do I need a separate oven?

The S-20 includes integrated top and bottom infrared heating — it both applies the powder and melts it in one pass. You do not need a separate curing oven when using the S-20.

What powder does the S-20 use?

The S-20 is designed for hot-melt TPU adhesive powder. STS recommends their P-6 Low Migration DTF Powder. Both white and black powders are available — white for light-to-mid fabrics, black for dark fabric applications where white powder might show through.

Does the S-20 have a built-in air filter? Is a separate air filtration system needed?

Yes — the S-20 has a built-in HEPA + charcoal filtration system. This is one of its key advantages over many competitor shakers. Replacement filter cartridges are available from River City Supply. For high-volume shops, STS also offers a standalone STS Air Filter Pro unit as additional protection.

Can the S-20 run inline with the XPD-924D continuously?

Settings vary by powder type, film formulation, and ambient shop conditions. As a starting point, set IR temperature to approximately 140–160°C and conveyor speed to match your printer’s output rate. Always run test strips when changing powder lots or film types.
