Description

Matsui Extender Base – 305 Mesh Performance at an Economy Price

Not every job requires the premium formulation of 301C Clear. Some jobs need a high-mesh clear base that gets the job done – soft, translucent, compatible with Neo Pigments – at the lowest possible cost per print.

That is Extender Base.

It is the budget-tier clear in the Matsui cotton system. Same 305 mesh capability as 301C Clear – so you still get the thinnest ink deposit and softest hand feel that high mesh delivers. Same translucent appearance. Same compatibility with Matsui additives. But at a lower price point that makes sense for high-volume production, basic color work, ink extending, and specialty effects like tunnel-on-tunnel.

The key difference from 301C Clear: Extender Base accepts up to 10% Neo Pigments (vs. 15% for 301C Clear). For standard color work – where most Pantone formulas call for 5–10% pigment anyway – this is not a limitation. The vast majority of Color Mixer Software formulas fall within the 10% range. Where it becomes a limitation is on the most saturated, most pigment-heavy formulas that require 11–15% pigment loading. For those jobs, use 301C Clear.

Think of it this way: 301C Clear is the color specialist – engineered for precise Pantone matching at maximum pigment loading. Extender Base is the budget workhorse – engineered for cost-effective production at standard pigment loading. If your shop prints a high volume of basic to moderate color work on cotton, Extender Base saves money on every gallon without sacrificing mesh range, softness, or print quality.

Extender Base vs. 301C Clear – Economy vs. Premium at 305 Mesh

This is the decision for every cotton-focused shop: when does the job require the premium base?

Spec Extender Base (WB0010) 301C Clear (WS0462)
Max Mesh 305/inch (120/cm) 305/inch (120/cm)
Max Pigment Loading Up to 10% Neo Pigments Up to 15% Neo Pigments — higher saturation range
Color Range Standard colors (5–10% formulas) — the vast majority of Pantone formulas Full range including highly saturated colors requiring 11–15% pigment
Specialty Use Tunnel-on-tunnel effects, ink extending Tone-on-tone clear overprint effects
Cost Economy — lowest cost per gallon at 305 mesh Premium — higher cost, premium formulation
Choose This When… Budget matters, standard pigment loading is sufficient, or you need tunnel-on-tunnel effects Precise Pantone matching at maximum saturation, or pigment-heavy formulas above 10%

The bottom line: Same mesh, same substrate, same additive compatibility. The difference is pigment loading capacity (10% vs. 15%) and price. For the vast majority of cotton color work where formulas call for 5–10% pigment, Extender Base delivers the same results as 301C Clear at a lower cost. For the most saturated colors requiring 11–15% pigment, upgrade to 301C Clear.

Extender Base vs. Simple Clear – Cotton Economy vs. Multi-Substrate Economy

Spec Extender Base (WB0010) Simple Clear (WS0561)
Max Mesh 305/inch (120/cm) — highest 160/inch (63/cm)
Elasticity Standard — not stretch-rated Excellent — stretch-rated for performance fabrics
Substrates Cotton, light fabrics (best on cotton) Cotton, polyester, blends, Dri-Fit, performance — broadest range
Max Pigment Up to 10% Up to 15%
Choose This When… Cotton is the substrate and you want the softest deposit at 305 mesh at the lowest cost You print on everything (cotton + performance) and need one economy base for all substrates

The bottom line: Two different economy strategies. Extender Base is the cotton economy specialist – highest mesh (305) for the softest deposit on cotton at the lowest cost. Simple Clear is the multi-substrate economy generalist – works on cotton AND performance fabrics with stretch, but at 160 mesh (heavier deposit, less soft).

Why Screen Printers Choose Extender Base

“I print high volumes of basic cotton color work and need to keep ink costs down.”
This is the core Extender Base use case. At the lowest cost per gallon of any 305 mesh clear in the Matsui lineup, Extender Base delivers the same mesh range, the same soft hand feel, and the same color quality as 301C Clear for formulas that fall within the 10% pigment range – which is the vast majority of standard cotton color work.

“I want to create tunnel-on-tunnel effects on light-colored garments.”
Print Extender Base alone – without pigments – for a distinctive tunnel-on-tunnel layering effect. The translucent clear creates subtle textural and visual dimension on the garment with superb softness. This specialty technique is popular for fashion-forward decoration, subtle branding, and premium texture effects.

“I need to extend my ink volume without adding water.”
Extender Base is designed for exactly this. Use it to extend the volume of pigmented Matsui inks while maintaining the acrylic binder’s integrity, adhesion, and softness properties. Water thins the binder and can compromise wash fastness – Extender Base thins the color concentration while keeping the binder system intact.

“I want fluorescent neon prints on cotton at the lowest possible cost.”
Mix Matsui Glow Pigments into Extender Base for budget-friendly fluorescent neon colors on cotton. These pigments are naturally UV/blacklight reactive – they glow intensely under blacklight illumination while remaining ultra-bright neon in normal daylight. Ideal for event merchandise, fun run shirts, youth events, and any budget-conscious application designed for UV-lit environments.

“My water-based ink keeps drying in the screen during production.”
Add Retarder MG at 1–5% to extend open time. Or use Quick Additive at 6–9% for open time, wash fastness, and softness in one shot. Browse all Matsui additives here.

“When should I upgrade to 301C Clear?”
Upgrade when the Pantone formula requires more than 10% pigment loading – the most saturated, pigment-heavy colors that Extender Base cannot accommodate. Also upgrade when the client specifies premium formulation quality for fashion-grade work. For standard production cotton color work at 5–10% pigment, Extender Base delivers equivalent results at lower cost.

Recommended Additives for Extender Base Production

Additive Dosage Production Problem It Solves
Retarder MG 1–5% Ink drying in the screen during production pauses and long runs — extends open time for smoother, uninterrupted printing
Fixer WF-N 1–5% Prints fading or cracking after washing — crosslinks the acrylic binder for dramatically improved laundry durability. Lowers cure temp to 300°F (150°C).
Softener MG 1–4% Ink sitting on top of fibers instead of bonding in — enhances penetration for better adhesion and even softer hand feel
Thickener B 0.25–1% Ink too thin for halftone or specialty work — increases viscosity for better dot control
RV Additive 1–3% Ink too thick for smooth printing — reduces viscosity for better flow and fabric penetration
Quick Additive 6–9% All-in-one solution — pre-balanced blend of Retarder MG + Fixer WF-N + Softener MG. One additive, one measurement, three production benefits. Recommended for most jobs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What pigments do I mix with Extender Base to create custom colors?

Mix Extender Base with up to 10% Matsui Neo Pigments — concentrated color pigments covering the full Pantone spectrum. Standard mixing ratio is 5–10% pigment to base by weight. For fluorescent neon effects, use Matsui Glow Pigments. Note: Extender Base maxes at 10% pigment — for formulas requiring 11–15%, use 301C Clear.

What is the difference between Extender Base and 301C Clear?

Same mesh range (305), same substrate (cotton), same additive compatibility. Two differences: pigment loading (Extender Base maxes at 10%, 301C Clear goes to 15%) and price (Extender Base is the economy option). For standard color work at 5–10% pigment, Extender Base delivers equivalent results at lower cost. For the most saturated formulas above 10%, upgrade to 301C Clear.

What is the tunnel-on-tunnel effect?

Print Extender Base alone — without pigments — on the garment. The translucent clear creates a subtle textural and visual layering effect with superb softness. The print area has a different texture and sheen than the unprinted garment, creating dimension without color. This technique is popular for fashion-forward decoration and subtle branding on light-colored garments.

Can I create fluorescent neon and blacklight-reactive prints with Extender Base?

Yes. Mix Matsui Glow Pigments into Extender Base for budget-friendly fluorescent neon colors. Important: Glow Pigments are fluorescent pigments — ultra-bright neon in normal daylight, NOT phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark. They do not glow on their own in the dark. However, they are naturally UV/blacklight reactive — under blacklight, they absorb UV energy and re-emit intensely bright visible light. Fluorescent yellow, pink, orange, and green produce the strongest reaction.

Can I use Extender Base to thin down pigmented inks?

Yes — Extender Base is designed for ink extending. Use it to increase the volume of pigmented Matsui inks while maintaining binder integrity, adhesion, and softness. This is better than adding water, which thins the binder and can compromise wash fastness and adhesion.

What additives should I use with Extender Base?

For most jobs, use Quick Additive at 6–9%. For individual control, use Retarder MG (1–5%), Fixer WF-N (1–5%), and Softener MG (1–4%). Browse all Matsui additives here.

Can I use Extender Base on performance fabrics?

Extender Base is not stretch-rated — it is designed for cotton. For performance and stretch fabrics, use Stretch Clear (150–180 mesh) or EasyPrint Clear (225 mesh). For a budget multi-substrate option that includes stretch, use Simple Clear at 160 mesh.

Can I use Extender Base on polyester?

Yes, but print an underbase blocker first to prevent dye sublimation migration. Print the blocker, flash, then apply your Extender Base + Neo Pigment color on top.

What mesh count should I use with Extender Base?

Use mesh up to 305/inch (120/cm). For the softest hand feel and thinnest deposit, use 280–305 mesh. For standard cotton work with good color saturation, use 230–280 mesh.

What is the difference between Extender Base and Simple Clear?

Different economy strategies. Extender Base is the cotton economy specialist — 305 mesh for the softest deposit on cotton, not stretch-rated, up to 10% pigment. Simple Clear is the multi-substrate economy generalist — 160 mesh with excellent stretch, works on cotton AND performance fabrics, up to 15% pigment. Choose Extender Base for cotton-only at high mesh. Choose Simple Clear for multi-substrate versatility.

Do all Matsui bases work with Neo Pigments?

Yes — every acrylic Matsui base is designed to mix with Matsui Neo Pigments and Glow Pigments. Extender Base accepts up to 10%. Most other bases accept up to 15%. The base determines substrate, mesh range, and finish. The pigments determine the color. The additives optimize the process.

Which Matsui bases require a blocker on polyester?

All of them. Every Matsui clear and mixing base requires a blocker on polyester to prevent dye sublimation migration. The acrylic bases use Under Base Blocker or Kombat Blocker. The polyurethane 350 Series uses Under Base Blocker 350. Always test before production.

Is Extender Base safe for children’s clothing?

Yes. Extender Base is PVC-free and environmentally safe.
