How Custom Color Matching Works

It’s three simple steps: 1) choose the Matsui base that matches your garment and finish, 2) send us your Pantone (PMS) code, and 3) we dispense and mix a precise gallon (or more) of your color. Colors are matched to printed and dried ink — not wet ink in the bucket — so what you approve is what you’ll print. Because the dispenser follows CMS formulas, we can reproduce the same color batch after batch, which keeps your brand consistent across every re-order.

Choosing Your Base — What’s the Difference?

Every custom color starts with a base, and the base determines the hand, opacity, stretch and how it behaves on your garment. Here’s the full lineup, grouped by family:

Standard Acrylic (301 Series) — everyday printing on light garments

301C Clear

Translucent base with the softest possible hand. Best for fine detail and tone-on-tone work on light cotton, where you want the print to melt into the fabric.

301M Matte

Semi-opaque matte white base with higher opacity than 301C for more coverage — a matte finish when you need the color to show up more solidly on light garments.

Which base should I choose?

Use a 301 base (301C for softest hand, 301M for more coverage) for everyday prints on light cotton; a Stretch/EasyPrint/Soft Stretch base for performance and athletic garments that need to flex; and a Discharge base (Brite for the most vibrant color, HM for fine detail) for dark 100% cotton. What’s the difference between Clear and Matte bases?

Clear bases are translucent with the softest hand — great on light garments and for tone-on-tone. Matte (Mat) bases are semi-opaque for more coverage and a bolder, flatter color. Clear feels softer; matte shows up stronger.

What are the discharge bases for?

Discharge inks remove the garment’s dye and replace it with color, giving a super-soft print on dark 100% cotton. Brite Discharge Base yields the brightest, most vibrant discharge colors; HM Discharge Base is built for higher mesh counts and finer detail.

How accurate is the color match?

Very — the dispenser measures pigment automatically to the CMS formula, removing human error, and colors are matched to printed and dried ink rather than wet ink in the bucket. That’s what you approve and what you print, batch after batch.

How do I cure and clean up?

Cure at 320°F (160°C) and clean up with water and mild soap. The ink is PVC-free.

How long does it take, and can I return it?

Custom mixing adds about one day to your order. Because each color is made to order specifically for you, custom colors are non-refundable — but your formula is saved so re-orders match exactly.
