Matsui 301M Matte White | Semi-Opaque High-Mesh Water-Based Matte Mixing Base for Custom Colors on Colored Cotton Screen Printing
Matsui
Matsui 301M Matte White (WS0463) is a premium semi-opaque, high-mesh water-based mixing base that delivers a smooth matte finish with an ultra-soft hand feel on cotton garments — including colored and dark-colored cotton where transparent bases like 301C Clear would disappear. Prints through mesh up to 305/inch (120/cm) for the softest prints achievable in textile screen printing. The milky, semi-opaque carrier partially covers the garment color, allowing mixed colors to remain visible and accurate on medium and dark cotton. Mix with Matsui Neo Pigments and Glow Pigments (up to 15%) for Pantone-accurate custom colors, fluorescent neon effects, and fashion-forward matte-finish decoration. Enhance production with Matsui additives for extended open time, improved wash fastness, and better fabric penetration. Also functions as a standalone matte white or primer underlay for semi-opaque color layers. Compatible with blends and polyester when used with an underbase blocker. Cures at 320°F (160°C). PVC-free. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, CPSIA, and HR4040 compliant.
Price range: $29.99 through $3,199.99
Description
Matsui 301M Matte White — Custom Colors That Show Up on Colored Cotton
Here is the problem 301C Clear cannot solve: your client hands you a charcoal heather cotton tee and wants a specific Pantone blue printed on it. You mix the Pantone blue into 301C Clear, print it, and the result is barely visible — because 301C is transparent, and the dark garment color absorbs the ink color underneath.
301M Matte White exists to solve that problem.
It is the semi-opaque counterpart to 301C Clear in the Matsui cotton mixing system. Same 305 mesh capability. Same ultra-soft hand feel. Same Pantone color matching with Neo Pigments. But instead of a transparent carrier, 301M Matte uses a milky, semi-opaque carrier that partially covers the garment color — allowing your mixed colors to remain visible and accurate on medium and dark-colored cotton garments where a clear base would vanish.
The matte finish is the other half of the equation. Where most Matsui bases produce a standard sheen or silicone-like surface, 301M Matte produces a flat, non-reflective surface that reads as sophisticated and intentional. Fashion brands, streetwear labels, and premium retail decorators reach for 301M Matte specifically because the matte finish communicates design intent — it looks like a deliberate aesthetic choice, not just “a print.”
Think of the Matsui cotton base system as two complementary halves. 301C Clear is for light-colored cotton where the garment color does not compete with the ink — transparent base, true pigment colors, clear overprint effects. 301M Matte is for colored cotton where the garment color needs to be partially covered for the ink to read correctly — semi-opaque base, matte finish, visible custom colors on any cotton shade.
One base for light cotton. One base for colored cotton. Together, they handle every cotton color matching job in your shop.
How 301M Matte Works with Matsui Neo Pigments and Glow Pigments
301M Matte is a mixing base — it is the carrier that brings Matsui Neo Pigments and Glow Pigments to life on colored cotton garments. The mixing system works like this:
301M Matte + Neo Pigments = Visible Custom Colors on Colored Cotton. Add up to 15% Matsui Neo Pigments (concentrated color pigments) to 301M Matte to create virtually any color in the Pantone spectrum — with the semi-opacity needed for the color to actually show up on medium and dark garments. Standard mixing ratio is 5-10% pigment to base by weight. Matsui’s free cloud-based Color Mixer Software provides exact formulas — enter the Pantone number, get the pigment ratios, mix, print.
The Neo Pigment series includes a full spectrum of concentrated color pigments — reds, blues, greens, yellows, oranges, violets, blacks, and more — that intermix precisely for accurate Pantone matching. Because they are concentrated, a small amount of pigment goes a long way.
The key difference from mixing with 301C Clear: when you mix pigments into 301M Matte, the semi-opaque milky carrier adds body to the color, giving it more visual presence on colored garments. The tradeoff is a slight shift in color character — colors mixed with 301M will appear slightly more pastel or chalky than the same formula mixed into 301C Clear. On light cotton, that shift is undesirable. On colored cotton, it is exactly what makes the color visible.
301M Matte + Glow Pigments = Fluorescent Neon on Colored Cotton. For high-impact specialty applications, mix Matsui Glow Pigments into 301M Matte to create vivid fluorescent neon prints on colored cotton with the matte finish and semi-opacity needed for the neon to pop against a dark background. Important: Matsui Glow Pigments are fluorescent pigments — they produce ultra-bright, electric neon colors in normal daylight, not phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark effects. They do NOT glow on their own in the dark. However, fluorescent pigments are naturally UV/blacklight reactive — under blacklight (UV) illumination, they absorb UV energy and re-emit it as intensely bright visible light, creating a dramatic neon glow effect. Colors like fluorescent yellow, pink, orange, and green produce the most intense blacklight reaction. Ideal for concert tees, festival merch, nightclub and rave wear, fun runs, and any garment designed for UV-lit environments.
301M Matte Alone = Standalone Matte White or Primer Underlay. Print 301M Matte by itself as a soft, semi-opaque matte white on colored cotton — the milky appearance creates a subtle, understated white with a flat finish that reads as fashion-forward. It can also function as a primer underlay: print 301M Matte first, flash, then print your color layer on top for enhanced opacity and a matte-finish foundation under your design.

How Matsui Additives Improve Your Production with 301M Matte
The base and pigments create the color. Matsui additives optimize the production process — solving common water-based printing challenges that cost you time, money, and rejected garments.
The problem: Water-based ink dries in the screen during production pauses, forcing you to clean and re-flood.
The additive solution: Retarder MG (1-5%) extends open time in the screen, giving you more working time between prints.
The problem: Prints fade or crack after repeated washing, especially on garments that see heavy laundry cycles.
The additive solution: Fixer WF-N (1-5%) crosslinks the acrylic binder for dramatically improved wash fastness. Also lowers cure temperature to 300°F (150°C).
The problem: The ink sits on top of the cotton fibers instead of bonding into them, affecting adhesion and hand feel.
The additive solution: Softener MG (1-4%) helps the ink penetrate deeper into the garment for better adhesion and an even softer hand feel.
The problem: You want all three benefits but do not want to measure and mix three separate additives.
The additive solution: Quick Additive (6-9%) is a pre-balanced all-in-one blend of Retarder MG, Fixer WF-N, and Softener MG. One additive, one measurement, all three production benefits.
Additional additives for specialized needs: Thickener B (0.25-1%) increases viscosity for halftone dot control. RV Additive (1-3%) reduces viscosity for better flow and fabric penetration.

Where 301M Matte Fits — Every Matsui Base, Side by Side
Matsui makes twelve different clear bases and mixing bases. Each one is designed to be mixed with Neo Pigments and Glow Pigments and enhanced with Matsui additives. The base you choose determines the substrate, mesh range, opacity, elasticity, and finish. The pigments determine the color. The additives optimize the process.
301M Matte occupies a specific and critical position: the high-mesh, semi-opaque, matte-finish cotton base for colored garments. It is the only Matsui base that combines all three of those attributes.

301M Matte vs. 301C Clear — Semi-Opaque vs. Transparent on Cotton
This is the decision every cotton-focused shop needs to understand. Same mesh range. Same substrate family. Completely different opacity and appearance.
| Spec | 301M Matte (WS0463) | 301C Clear (WS0462) |
|---|---|---|
| Max Mesh | 305/inch (120/cm) | 305/inch (120/cm) |
| Opacity | Semi-opaque — partially covers garment color | Transparent — garment color shows through |
| Appearance | Milky white | Translucent / clear |
| Finish | Matte — flat, non-reflective | Translucent / clear — standard sheen |
| Best Garment Colors | Colored cotton — medium tones, dark tones, heathers | Light-colored cotton — white, cream, pastels |
| Color Character When Mixed | Slightly pastel/chalky — milky carrier adds body for visibility on colored garments | True, vivid pigment color — transparent carrier keeps colors clean and saturated |
| Standalone Use | Yes — as matte white or primer underlay | Yes — as clear overprint for tone-on-tone effects |
| Neo Pigment Mixing | Up to 15% | Up to 15% |
| Choose This When… | The garment is colored and you need the ink to show. The matte finish is desirable. | The garment is light and you want true, vivid colors or clear effects. |
The bottom line: Stock both. 301C Clear handles light cotton — true colors, clear effects, transparent prints. 301M Matte handles colored cotton — visible colors, matte finish, semi-opaque coverage. Same Neo Pigments, same additives, same mesh range. Different opacity for different garment colors.
301M Matte vs. EasyPrint Mat — Cotton vs. Performance
| Spec | 301M Matte (WS0463) | EasyPrint Mat 301 (WS0528) |
|---|---|---|
| Max Mesh | 305/inch (120/cm) — highest | 225/inch (89/cm) |
| Elasticity | Standard — not stretch-rated | Excellent — stretch-rated for performance fabrics |
| Substrate | Colored cotton — softest deposit at 305 mesh | Performance fabrics, Dri-Fit — with stretch and elasticity |
| Choose This When… | Cotton is the substrate and you want semi-opaque matte colors at the highest mesh | Performance/stretch is the substrate and you need semi-opaque coverage with elasticity |
The bottom line: Both are semi-opaque mixing bases — they solve the same problem (visible colors on colored garments) on different substrates. 301M Matte is for cotton at 305 mesh. EasyPrint Mat is for performance fabrics at 225 mesh with stretch. Both mix with the same Neo Pigments and additives.
Why Screen Printers Choose 301M Matte
“I need custom Pantone colors that actually show up on dark-colored cotton tees.”
This is the core 301M use case. Mix with up to 15% Matsui Neo Pigments using Matsui’s Color Mixer Software for exact Pantone formulas. The semi-opaque carrier provides the coverage needed for colors to remain visible on charcoal, navy, forest green, burgundy, and other dark cotton garments where transparent bases like 301C Clear would vanish. Add Fixer WF-N for garments that need to survive heavy wash cycles.
“I print for fashion brands and streetwear labels that specifically request a matte finish.”
The matte market is growing. More brands want a flat, non-reflective print surface that reads as intentional and design-forward — not the standard sheen that most inks produce. 301M Matte is the only Matsui cotton base that delivers this matte finish as a built-in characteristic. You do not need a matte overcoat or post-process. The finish is in the formulation.
“I need a standalone soft matte white for subtle decoration on colored cotton.”
Print 301M Matte by itself — without pigments — for a soft, understated matte white on colored garments. The milky semi-opacity creates a subtle white that does not scream “white ink” the way a high-opacity 301W-B would. Popular for minimalist branding, tonal logos, and fashion-forward decoration where subtlety is the point.
“I want to create fluorescent neon prints on dark cotton that pop under blacklight.”
Mix Matsui Glow Pigments into 301M Matte for vivid fluorescent neon colors with the semi-opacity needed to pop against a dark cotton background. These pigments are naturally UV/blacklight reactive — they glow intensely under blacklight illumination. The 301M Matte carrier gives fluorescent colors more visual presence on dark garments than a transparent base would. Ideal for concert tees, festival merch, nightclub apparel, and event shirts designed for UV-lit environments.
“My water-based ink keeps drying in the screen during production.”
This is a process problem, not an ink problem — and Matsui additives solve it. Add Retarder MG at 1-5% to extend open time. Or use Quick Additive at 6-9% for open time, wash fastness, and softness in one shot.
“I use 301M Matte as a primer underlay to boost opacity before printing colors.”
Print 301M Matte first, flash, then print your Neo Pigment color on top. The semi-opaque matte underlay partially covers the garment color and provides a consistent foundation for the color layer — resulting in more accurate, vibrant colors on medium and dark cotton without needing a full opaque white underbase.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What pigments do I mix with 301M Matte to create custom colors?
Mix 301M Matte with Matsui Neo Pigments — a series of concentrated color pigments that cover the full Pantone spectrum. Add 5–10% pigment to base by weight for standard colors, up to 15% maximum. For fluorescent neon effects, use Matsui Glow Pigments with 301M Matte. The semi-opaque carrier gives both standard and fluorescent colors more visual presence on colored cotton than a transparent base would.
What is the difference between 301M Matte and 301C Clear?
Same mesh range (305), same Neo Pigment and additive compatibility, completely different opacity. 301C Clear is transparent — best for light cotton where you want true, vivid pigment colors. 301M Matte is semi-opaque with a matte finish — best for colored/dark cotton where you need the color to show up against the garment. Stock both to handle every cotton garment color.
Can I create fluorescent neon and blacklight-reactive prints with 301M Matte?
Yes. Mix Matsui Glow Pigments into 301M Matte for vivid fluorescent neon colors. Important: Glow Pigments are fluorescent pigments — they produce ultra-bright neon colors in normal daylight, NOT phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark effects. They do not glow on their own in the dark. However, they are naturally UV/blacklight reactive — under blacklight, they absorb UV energy and re-emit intensely bright visible light. Fluorescent yellow, pink, orange, and green produce the strongest blacklight reaction. The 301M Matte carrier gives these fluorescent colors more visual impact on dark cotton than 301C Clear would.
What additives should I use with 301M Matte?
For most jobs, use Quick Additive at 6–9% — a pre-balanced blend that solves screen drying, wash fastness, and fabric penetration in one measurement. For individual control, use Retarder MG (1–5%), Fixer WF-N (1–5%), and Softener MG (1–4%). Browse all Matsui additives here.
Can I use 301M Matte on performance fabrics like Dri-Fit?
301M Matte is not stretch-rated — it is formulated for cotton. For semi-opaque colors on performance and stretch fabrics, use EasyPrint Mat 301 (225 mesh) or Stretch Mat 301 (150–180 mesh). Both are stretch-rated and mix with the same Neo Pigments and additives.
Can I use 301M Matte on polyester?
Yes, but you must print an underbase blocker first to prevent dye sublimation migration. Print the blocker, flash, then apply your 301M Matte + Neo Pigment color on top.
Can I print 301M Matte by itself as a standalone white?
Yes — 301M Matte prints as a soft, semi-opaque matte white on colored cotton. It produces a subtle, understated white with a flat, non-reflective finish. It can also function as a primer underlay: print 301M Matte first, flash, then print your color layer on top for enhanced opacity and a matte foundation.
What mesh count should I use with 301M Matte?
The recommended range is 120–305/inch (47–120/cm). For maximum softness and thinnest deposit on colored cotton, use 280–305 mesh. For more coverage and opacity on darker garments, use 120–230 mesh — the lower the mesh, the heavier the deposit and the more the garment color is covered. Use a 60–80 durometer square-edge squeegee.
Will the matte finish change when I add pigments?
No — the matte finish is built into the 301M Matte formulation. Colors mixed with Neo Pigments and Glow Pigments will retain the matte, flat finish. This is one of the key reasons fashion brands choose 301M Matte — the finish stays consistent regardless of the color mixed into it.
Do all Matsui bases work with Neo Pigments?
Yes — every acrylic Matsui base (301C, 301M, EasyPrint Clear, EasyPrint Mat, Stretch Clear, Stretch Mat, Soft Stretch Clear, Acrylicon Clear, Simple Clear, and Extender Base) is designed to mix with Matsui Neo Pigments and Glow Pigments. The base determines the substrate, mesh range, and finish. The pigments determine the color. The additives optimize the process.
Which Matsui bases require a blocker on polyester?
All of them. Every Matsui clear and mixing base requires an underbase blocker on polyester or dark poly blends to prevent dye sublimation migration. The acrylic bases use Under Base Blocker or Kombat Blocker. The polyurethane 350 Series uses Under Base Blocker 350. Always test before production.
Is 301M Matte safe for children’s clothing?
Yes. 301M Matte is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified (suitable for baby products), CPSIA compliant, and HR4040 compliant. PVC-free, phthalate-free, no co-solvents.
Why would I choose a semi-opaque base instead of a clear base?
Use a clear base (301C Clear, EasyPrint Clear, Stretch Clear) on light-colored garments where you want the fabric color to show through — true color matching, tone-on-tone, translucent effects. Use a semi-opaque base (301M Matte, EasyPrint Mat, Stretch Mat) on colored or dark garments where you need the ink to partially cover the fabric color so your mixed colors remain visible and accurate.
