Blackbody Forced Air Conveyor Dryer – Built for Water-Based, Discharge, and DTG Ink Curing

Blackbody

The Blackbody Forced Air Conveyor Dryer combines BBC’s infrared panels with active forced-air circulation to cure water-based, discharge, and DTG inks in a single pass. Available in four configurations: 24″ belt (7,250W) or 36″ belt (12,000W), each in single-phase or three-phase power. Dual-zone digital heat control and a powered exhaust make this the dryer water-based shops upgrade to when they’re tired of double-curing.

Why Choose the Forced Air?

True Forced-Air Curing

Active airflow drives moisture out of water-based, discharge, and DTG inks. The physics that infrared-only dryers can’t replicate.

7,250W or 12,000W Output

Choose the 24″ belt (7,250W) for small-to-mid production, or the 36″ belt (12,000W) for heavy water-based prints, athletic poly inks, and DTG digital white in one pass.

Dual-Zone Heat Control

Two independent zones let you ramp fast and dwell at cure temperature. Maintains within ±5°F accuracy.

Powered Exhaust System

Actively vents steam and fumes. Critical for water-based, discharge, and DTG production. Better print quality, safer shop.

Production Throughput by Ink Type

BBC Industries publishes throughput rates per ink type for the production-grade dryers. Plastisol cures fastest (lowest dwell time). Water-based and DTG inks need longer dwell for moisture evaporation, which lowers throughput — but the Forced Air’s forced-air system makes it possible at all (most IR-only dryers can’t cure DTG digital white in one pass).

Plastisol Inks
~525/hr (24″) · ~700/hr (36″)
Fastest cure — minimal dwell required. Use full belt speed.
Water-Based / Discharge
~285/hr (24″) · ~380/hr (36″)
Forced air evaporates moisture — single-pass cure where IR-only dryers fail.
DTG Digital White
~95/hr (24″) · ~130/hr (36″)
Heaviest moisture load — longest dwell. Critical to use forced-air dryer.
What affects real-world throughput: print size (larger prints = fewer per belt section), ink deposit thickness (heavier deposits = more dwell), operator loading speed (the dryer can run faster than most operators can load), shop ambient temperature, and substrate fiber content. These rates assume continuous loading at 60 prints/minute belt-section throughput.

Compare the 4 Forced Air Models

The Blackbody Forced Air comes in four configurations — two belt widths (24″ or 36″) each available in single-phase or three-phase power. All four share the same IR / convection heating technology, dual-zone digital heat control, TruTrak™ belt tracking, and 3-year heater warranty. The key differences are belt width, total wattage, and electrical phase.

12,000W · 29A @ 240V. Three-phase splits the load — easier circuit sizing for production shops.

Engineering Deep-Dive

Why Forced Air

Water leaves ink as steam. IR-only dryers heat the ink but trap the steam against the print. Forced air physically removes that moisture.

Single-Pass Curing

Without forced air, water-based and discharge prints typically need 2 passes. The Forced Air dryer cures them in one pass at full belt speed.

Power Requirements

Hardwired direct connection — circuit size depends on model. 24″ single-phase needs 30A @ 240V, 24″ three-phase 18A, 36″ single-phase 50A, 36″ three-phase 29A. Plan for an electrician install; equipment financing makes the install cost manageable.

Application & Workflow Notes

Best Ink Type

Water-based, discharge, DTG digital white in a single pass. Plastisol cures with belt speed dialed up.

Best Press Pairing

Auto presses (Vastex Stryker, ROQ ECO, M&R Sportsman) or busy manual production lines doing water-based work.

Workflow Position

Dedicated production dryer. Plan for a dedicated 240V circuit sized to your chosen model (30A / 50A single-phase, or 18A / 29A three-phase), ventilation for the powered exhaust, and 8-10 ft of floor space.

Important to Know Before You Order

Estimated build time: 6-8 weeks. Blackbody dryers are made-to-order by BBC Industries in Pacific, MO and build queues fluctuate seasonally. For current build times before you order, email [email protected], message us through the website, or call (512) 454-0505.
Install considerations: Requires hardwired direct electrical connection — plan for an electrician install. Circuit size depends on which of the 4 models you order: the 24″ single-phase needs 30A @ 240V, 24″ three-phase needs 18A, 36″ single-phase needs 50A, 36″ three-phase needs 29A. Exhaust ducting to outside is recommended for water-based work.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do I need forced air for water-based inks?
Water-based and discharge inks release water as steam during curing. Infrared-only dryers heat the ink but trap that steam against the print surface, which slows cure and can cause cosmetic defects. Forced air physically removes the moisture, letting the ink polymer fully crosslink in a single pass.
Can I run plastisol through the Forced Air dryer?
Absolutely. Plastisol cures faster on the Forced Air than on most non-forced-air dryers because of the additional heat output (7,250W on 24″ models, 12,000W on 36″ models) combined with active airflow. Just dial up the belt speed.
How does it compare to the Aeolus?
The Forced Air ($8,550-$11,050) is the entry-level production forced-air dryer. The Aeolus ($18,595-$23,100) adds Edgemax™ edge-to-edge temperature distribution, wider belt options (up to 54″), and is engineered for higher-volume auto-press shops. See full comparison →
Do I need to vent the exhaust outdoors?
Strongly recommended for water-based, discharge, and DTG work. The powered exhaust removes moisture, ammonia (from discharge inks), and other VOCs out of your shop. A simple flexible duct to an exterior wall typically does the job.
How long does shipping take?
Blackbody conveyor dryers ship directly from BBC Industries in Pacific, Missouri. Build times vary by model — typically 1-2 weeks for the MB1500 and Little Buddy II, 2-4 weeks for the Big Buddy III, and 4-8 weeks for the Forced Air and Aeolus models. Call River City Supply at (512) 454-0505 for the current build queue before you order.
Will this cure plastisol ink properly?
Yes. BBC’s infrared panels are engineered to bring plastisol to its 320°F cure temperature efficiently. Always verify cure with a temperature gun or temp-tape on the print itself — not on the belt or shirt next to the print.
What’s BBC Industries’ background?
BBC Industries (Black Body Corporation) has been manufacturing infrared heating equipment since the 1970s and has supplied the screen printing industry since the Black Flash® launched in 1982. They’re the only U.S. manufacturer of electric infrared screen-printing dryers — every Blackbody unit ships from Pacific, Missouri.
Do you offer financing?
Yes — River City Supply offers equipment financing through our financing partner. Most Blackbody dryers qualify for Section 179 tax write-offs, and approval typically takes under 24 hours. See equipment financing options.
