Matsui Pearl Binder 301 | Water-Based Pearlescent Iridescent Ink for Soft Luxury Screen Printing on Cotton & Blends — Tintable with Neo Pigments for Custom Pearl Colors

Matsui

Matsui Pearl Binder 301 (WS0508) is a water-based special-effect pearlescent ink that produces a luminous, iridescent finish — the subtle, color-shifting light play of pearl, mother-of-pearl, and opalescent surfaces. Unlike metallic shimmer inks that reflect a single metallic tone, Pearl Binder 301 creates a softer, more nuanced light-reactive effect that shifts subtly as the viewing angle changes, producing delicate rainbow-like highlights across the print surface. Use straight from the container for a stunning standalone pearl finish, OR tint with up to 2% Matsui Neo Pigments to create custom colored pearl effects — pearlescent pink, pearlescent blue, pearlescent lavender, and more. Prints through mesh up to 110/inch (43/cm). Ultra-soft hand feel that PVC inks cannot match. Ideal for fashion apparel, bridal and formal wear decoration, feminine and luxury branding, premium retail prints, and any application where understated elegance outperforms bold metallic flash. Enhance production with Matsui additives. Requires zero viscosity modifications. Can be dry cleaned and ironed. Cures at 320°F (160°C). PVC-free. OEKO-TEX® compliant, CPSIA, and HR4040 compliant.

Description

Matsui Pearl Binder 301 — The Softest Light Effect in Screen Printing

Metallic shimmer catches the eye from across the room. Pearl catches the eye from across the table — and holds it.

Pearl Binder 301 produces a pearlescent finish: a luminous, iridescent quality that shifts subtly with the viewing angle. It does not blast bright metallic reflections like Gold Shimmer 620 or Silver Shimmer 620. Instead, it creates a soft, diffused glow — delicate rainbow-like highlights that move across the print surface as the light changes. The effect is closer to the inside of a seashell than the surface of a chrome bumper. Elegant. Refined. Understated.

This is the special-effect ink for designs where subtlety is the strategy. Where the client does not want to shout metallic — they want to whisper luxury. Bridal boutique merchandise. Feminine fashion prints. Premium retail branding. Luxury cosmetics packaging merch. High-end event apparel where the design communicates sophistication through restraint.

The pearlescent particles in Pearl Binder 301 are fundamentally different from the metallic particles in the Shimmer 620 series. Metallic particles are opaque reflectors — they bounce light in a single metallic tone. Pearlescent particles are translucent light-refracting structures — they split light into its component wavelengths and create a soft, multi-toned iridescence. The result is a print that looks alive — subtly shifting from warm to cool highlights as you move around it.

And like every Matsui water-based ink, it delivers an ultra-soft hand feel that metallic plastisol inks cannot approach. The pearlescent area feels like part of the garment, not a stiff coating sitting on top of it.

Two Modes — Standalone Pearl or Custom Colored Pearl

Mode 1: Standalone Pearl

Open the container and print. Pearl Binder 301 produces a luminous, white-pearl iridescent finish directly on the garment. On light garments the effect is a subtle, ethereal glow. On dark garments, print over a white underbase for a more visible opalescent contrast. No mixing required.

Mode 2: Tinted Custom Pearl Colors

Add up to 2% Matsui Neo Pigments to shift the pearl base into colored iridescent tones.

  • Add Neo Pigment Red — pearlescent pink or rose
  • Add Neo Pigment Blue — pearlescent blue or ice
  • Add Neo Pigment Violet — pearlescent lavender or lilac
  • Add Neo Pigment Green — pearlescent mint or seafoam
  • Add Neo Pigment Yellow — pearlescent champagne or warm ivory
  • Add Neo Pigment Orange — pearlescent peach or coral

Important: Tinting maximum is 2%. Pearl Binder 301 is a delicate effect. Higher pigment percentages will overwhelm the pearlescent particles and produce a standard tinted ink rather than a colored pearl. A trace amount shifts the tone while preserving the iridescence.

The result is not a color with pearl in it. It is pearl with a hint of color. The pearlescent effect remains dominant while the pigment gently shifts the tone.

Pearl Binder 301 vs. Shimmer 620 Series — Pearlescent vs Metallic

Spec Pearl Binder 301 (WS0508) Gold / Silver Shimmer 620
Effect Type Pearlescent / iridescent — soft, diffused, color-shifting light play Metallic shimmer — bright single-tone metallic reflection
How Light Interacts Translucent particles refract light, creating subtle rainbow highlights that shift with viewing angle Opaque particles reflect light as a single metallic tone
Visual Character Subtle, elegant, understated — soft luxury glow Bold, bright, attention-grabbing metallic shine
Standalone Color White pearl / opalescent base Gold metallic or silver metallic
Max Pigment Tinting Up to 2% — delicate effect easily overwhelmed by pigment Up to 5%
Tinted Effect Pearl with color hint — pearlescent pink, blue, lavender Metallic color — metallic copper, metallic blue, metallic green
Analogous To Mother-of-pearl, seashell interior, opal, moonstone Chrome, polished metal, metallic foil
Max Mesh 110/inch (43/cm) 110/inch (Gold: 80-120)
Best For Bridal merch, feminine fashion, luxury branding, subtle premium effects Streetwear metallic logos, chrome text, high-impact graphics
Choose This When The design calls for soft iridescent glow rather than bold metallic flash The design calls for bright metallic shine

The simple decision: If the client says “I want it to shine metallic,” use Gold Shimmer or Silver Shimmer. If the client says “I want it to glow softly,” choose Pearl Binder 301.

How Matsui Additives Improve Production

Pearl Binder 301 is production-ready from the container. Matsui additives help optimize printing performance.

Ink drying in the screen: Use Retarder MG (1–5%) to extend open time.

Pearlescent finish fading after washing: Use Fixer WF-N (1–5%) to crosslink the binder.

Ink sitting on top of fibers: Use Softener MG (1–4%) to improve penetration and softness.

All-in-one option: Quick Additive (6–9%).

Additional options include Thickener B (0.25–1%) to increase viscosity and RV Additive (1–3%) to reduce viscosity.

Printing Tips for Maximum Pearl Effect

Mesh selection

Print through mesh up to 110/inch (43/cm). Lower mesh deposits more pearlescent particles for a stronger pearl effect.

Garment color

Pearl Binder 301 is translucent, so garment color influences the appearance. On light garments the effect is soft and luminous. On dark garments print over a white underbase for best visibility.

Lighting

The pearlescent effect is most visible under angled lighting such as sunlight or spotlights. Under flat lighting the effect appears more subtle.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between Pearl Binder 301 and the Shimmer 620 inks?

They create completely different effects. Pearl Binder 301 is pearlescent and iridescent, with soft, diffused, color-shifting light play that changes with viewing angle. Gold Shimmer 620 and Silver Shimmer 620 are metallic, with bright, direct, single-tone reflections. Pearl whispers luxury. Shimmer shouts metallic. Both are beautiful, just in different ways.

Can I tint Pearl Binder 301 with Neo Pigments?

Yes, but only up to 2%. Pearl is a delicate effect. Higher pigment percentages overwhelm the pearlescent particles and reduce the iridescence. A trace amount of Neo Pigment can shift the tone toward pink pearl, blue pearl, or lavender pearl while preserving the color-shifting pearl effect.

Why is the tinting maximum only 2% instead of 5% or 15%?

Pearlescent particles are translucent light-refracting structures that create iridescence by splitting light. Too much pigment coats and obscures those particles, turning the effect from iridescent pearl into a tinted ink with some leftover sheen. At 2% or below, the pigment adds tonal direction while the pearl effect remains dominant.

What mesh count should I use?

Up to 110/inch (43/cm). Lower mesh deposits more pearlescent particles for a more visible effect. Do not exceed 110 mesh, because finer openings can filter out the pearlescent particles.

Can I print Pearl Binder 301 on dark garments?

Yes, but print a white underbase first, flash it, then print Pearl Binder 301 on top. The white gives the pearl a reflective foundation so it stays visible against the dark fabric. Without a white underbase, the effect can get lost into the garment color.

Can I use Pearl Binder 301 as an iridescent overcoat over a colored design?

Yes. Print your standard Matsui color design, flash it, then print Pearl Binder 301 over the top. The translucent pearl layer adds an iridescent overcoat to the color underneath, giving it a shimmering, opalescent quality.

What additives should I use with Pearl Binder 301?

For most jobs, use Quick Additive at 6–9%. For individual control, use Retarder MG at 1–5%, which is especially important with particle-based inks to help prevent screen clogging, plus Fixer WF-N at 1–5% and Softener MG at 1–4%. Browse all Matsui additives here.

Is Pearl Binder 301 softer than pearlescent plastisol?

Dramatically softer. Pearl Binder 301 is water-based, so the pearlescent particles integrate with the fabric instead of sitting on top as a rigid PVC layer. The hand feel difference is immediately noticeable.

Does the pearlescent effect wash off?

With proper curing at 320°F (160°C), the pearl effect is durable. Add Fixer WF-N at 1–5% to crosslink the binder and help lock the pearlescent particles in place for maximum wash durability.

Can Pearl Binder 301 be dry cleaned and ironed?

Yes. Prints made with Pearl Binder 301 are safe for both dry cleaning and ironing.

Is Pearl Binder 301 visible under all lighting?

The pearlescent effect is most visible under direct, angled light such as sunlight, spotlights, or directional indoor lighting. Under flat, diffused fluorescent lighting, the effect is more subtle. It helps to consider the end-use lighting environment when designing with pearl.

Is Pearl Binder 301 safe for children’s clothing?

Yes. It is OEKO-TEX® compliant, CPSIA compliant, and HR4040 compliant. It is also PVC-free and environmentally safe.
