PMI 451 Split Tape 3″ — The Smarter Way to Mask a Screen

Every screen printing shop tapes their frames. The difference is how long it takes — and how much cleanup follows. PMI 451 Split Tape’s patented dual-zone design sticks exactly where it should and releases cleanly where it shouldn’t.

Ink Compatibility

✅ Plastisol
✅ Water-Based

Why PMI 451 Split Tape 3″ Outperforms Regular Masking Tape

🔵

The Blue Zone — No Adhesive

The blue stripe contains zero adhesive. It sits against the inner channel and well of your frame, making it impossible for the tape to bond to surfaces that need to stay clean. This is what enables the one-pull clean removal.

High-Tack Adhesive Where It Counts

The clear adhesive side bonds firmly to your mesh, sealing off open areas between the stencil edge and the frame. Prevents ink bleed-through during printing while still allowing easy removal after the job.

✂️

Tear-Resistant Backing

PMI 451’s backing tears cleanly and predictably, giving you straight, precise edges on every strip. No fraying, no second guessing — just fast, accurate application every time.

🛡️

Emulsion Safe

Releases without pulling your stencil — especially important after long runs with heat, which can cause some aggressive tape adhesives to bond more strongly to emulsion over time.

⏱️

Faster Reclaim

One clean peel replaces scraping, solvent application, and picking off tape fragments — freeing up your crew for the next job. Shops consistently report faster reclaim times after switching to PMI.

🏭

Universal Frame Compatibility

Works on rigid aluminum, roller, and wood frames. The 3″ width fits standard frame channels in one strip.

How to Apply PMI Split Tape

Step 1 — Orient the Tape

Blue side faces the frame well. Clear adhesive side faces out over the mesh. Getting this right is what makes clean removal possible.

Step 2 — Apply Along the Frame

Work one side at a time, keeping the tape straight and tension-free.

Step 3 — Press the Adhesive Zone

Firm pressure along the clear zone seals the mesh. Run a finger or squeegee to eliminate air pockets.

Step 4 — One-Pull Removal

After printing, grip a corner and peel back in one motion. Clean, fast, done.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions — PMI 451 Split Tape 3″

What makes PMI Split Tape different from regular masking tape?

PMI 451 features a patented dual-zone construction. The blue stripe contains zero adhesive — it sits against the frame well without bonding. The clear zone is a high-tack adhesive that seals the mesh. Standard masking tape is fully adhesive across its entire width, meaning it bonds to everything it touches, leaves residue, and often requires solvent to remove cleanly. PMI requires no solvents and removes in one pull.

Which side of the tape goes against the frame well?

The blue side goes against the inside of the frame (the channel or well). The clear adhesive side goes over the mesh edge to create the seal. Getting this orientation right is the key to clean removal — the blue non-adhesive zone is what allows the tape to peel off without residue or tearing.

Why is the 3″ width the most popular option?

The 3-inch width covers the frame channel plus the mesh edge in a single strip on most standard aluminum and roller frames. That eliminates the need to double up tape or run multiple narrow strips. The 2″ is popular for tighter frames or when printing close to edges; the 4″ is preferred for large-format or wood frames with wider channels.

Does PMI Split Tape work with water-based and discharge inks?

Yes. PMI 451 is compatible with plastisol, water-based, discharge, and specialty inks. The adhesive formulation maintains its seal even with lower-viscosity water-based and discharge formulas, which are more prone to seeping through inadequate tape seals than thicker plastisol.

Will PMI Split Tape damage my emulsion on removal?

No — PMI 451 is specifically engineered to be emulsion safe. The adhesive releases cleanly from the mesh without lifting the stencil. This is especially important when screens are used on long runs or exposed to heat from the press, which can cause some aggressive tape adhesives to bond more aggressively over time.

How many rolls are in a case?

Case counts are specific to each width: the 3″ comes 24 rolls per case, the 2″ comes 36 rolls per case, and the 4″ comes 18 rolls per case — all rolls are 60 yards. Cases offer better per-roll pricing for high-volume shops. Select the case option at checkout or contact River City Supply for current pricing.

Can I reuse PMI Split Tape for multiple press runs?

PMI Split Tape is designed for single-use per press run. After removal, the adhesive zone may be compromised by ink or debris, and re-application would not guarantee a complete seal. Given the low cost per roll and the risk of ink seepage, fresh tape on each screen setup is always the recommended approach.

How does PMI Split Tape help reduce labor costs?

In production environments, the reclaim process is a constant labor drain. Standard tape often shreds, leaves adhesive, or requires solvent application to fully remove — all of which add minutes per screen. Multiply that by dozens or hundreds of screens per week and the labor cost is significant. PMI’s one-pull clean removal eliminates those extra steps, allowing your crew to reclaim faster and move screens through more efficiently.
