Step-by-Step: How to Use VLR

Removing a misprinted HTV design takes about 60-90 seconds per garment once you have your workflow down. The key is applying VLR through the back of the fabric so the solvent reaches the adhesive from below.

Set Up Ventilation

VLR is highly flammable and produces vapors. Open windows, run a fan, or work near a ventilation hood. Keep open flames and sparks away. Don’t use near a heat press in operation.

Test on a Hidden Area

Apply a small drop to an inside seam or hem. Wait 30 seconds, then rub with a white rag. Check for fabric weakening, color transfer, or damage before proceeding.

Turn Garment Inside Out

Lay the shirt flat on a clean work surface, inside-out. The adhesive side of the HTV (now facing up) is what VLR needs to penetrate. This is the most important step — applying from the front side rarely works as cleanly.

Apply VLR Through the Fabric

Using the Yorker spout, apply a small puddle of VLR directly onto the back side of the unwanted HTV — through the fabric. The solvent will soak through the cotton and reach the HTV adhesive from the underside.

Wait 10-15 Seconds

Let the solvent penetrate the adhesive layer. For thicker HTV (Glitter, StripFlock, Brick) or larger designs, wait 30 seconds for the solvent to fully break down the adhesive.

Stretch & Peel

Flip the garment right-side-out. Gently stretch the fabric near the HTV — this cracks the adhesive bond. Peel the HTV off in one piece if possible. For tight detail, use a plastic scraper or the back of a credit card.

Clean Up Residue

Apply VLR to a clean white rag and rub the front side of the garment to dissolve any remaining adhesive. Repeat the front-rub if needed.

Does VLR remove screen print ink?
VLR removes screen print adhesive residue (like pallet adhesive that transferred to the back of the shirt) but it does NOT remove cured plastisol ink. How long does an open bottle of VLR last?
Unopened bottles have a 24+ month shelf life. Once opened, keep the cap tight when not in use — VLR is volatile and will evaporate over time if the cap is left loose. An opened bottle stored correctly stays effective for 12+ months. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and ignition sources.
What if VLR doesn’t work on the first try?
Two things to check: (1) Did you apply VLR through the BACK of the fabric? Applying it to the top of the HTV rarely works as well — the solvent needs to reach the adhesive from below. (2) For thicker HTV like Siser Glitter, StripFlock, or Brick, you may need a second application and a 30-second wait instead of 10-15 seconds. For very old or heat-set HTV (weeks-old, washed multiple times), 2-3 applications may be needed. Patience pays off.
Can I use VLR on a heat press platen or other equipment?
VLR is formulated for fabric reclamation, not equipment cleaning. For removing adhesive buildup from heat press platens, use a dedicated pallet adhesive remover. For pallet adhesive on screen print platens, the AlbaChem 1787 Mist Adhesive product page has more guidance. For removing vinyl from hard surfaces (glass, metal, painted surfaces, vehicle decals), use AlbaChem Vinyl Liftoff instead.
