Why Choose the Afford-A-Flash 18″?

Larger 18″x22″ Element Face

Covers larger prints — full-front graphics, oversized chest hits, and wider images that don’t fit a 16″ element.

Standard 120V Power

NEMA 5-20P (20-amp) outlet. Most modern shops have these on at least one circuit. No 240V required.

Stand & Casters Included

Same heavy-duty stand as the 16″ Afford-A-Flash. Wheel it where you need it; lock the casters when you’re flashing.

Drop-Ships from BBC Manufacturer

Ships directly from BBC Industries in Pacific, MO. Typically in-stock at BBC for fast turnaround. Free shipping in the continental U.S.

Engineering Deep-Dive

Why Bigger Element

An 18″ x 22″ element face flashes wider images and gives you margin around the print edge — important for full-bleed front graphics and sleeve prints.

Power Considerations

2,223W draws 18.5A on 120V. You need a 20-amp circuit (NEMA 5-20P outlet — the one with the horizontal slot). Don’t try to plug it into a 15A outlet.

Same Trade-offs as 16″

Same Afford-A-Flash trade-offs vs. the Black Flash: no switch, no indicator light, no 360° head. The 18″ Afford-A-Flash uses the same heating element as the 18″ Black Flash.

Application & Workflow Notes

Best For

Startups printing larger images, shops doing full-front graphics, and as a backup unit at production shops with 16″+ platens.

Best Press Pairing

Manual presses with 16″ or 18″ platens. The 22″ heater dimension means you have margin around the print for full-coverage flash.

Workflow Position

Same as the 16″ — swing-over flash between colors, or standalone gel-stage flash before final cure.

Important to Know Before You Order

Fulfillment & build time: Blackbody flash dryers drop-ship directly from BBC Industries in Pacific, MO — we don’t stock these at River City. BBC typically has flash dryers in-stock for fast turnaround (1-2 weeks), but build queues can run 6-8 weeks during peak season. For current stock and build status before you order, email [email protected], message us through the website, or call (512) 454-0505.
20-amp circuit required: The 18″ Afford-A-Flash needs a NEMA 5-20P outlet (the one with the horizontal slot). Your electrician can swap a 15A outlet for a 20A outlet on the same wire if it’s #12 AWG.
No on/off switch: Same as the 16″ Afford-A-Flash — no switch, no indicator light. Unplug to turn off.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I need a 20-amp outlet?
Yes. The 18″ Afford-A-Flash draws 18.5 amps at 120V — too much for a standard 15A outlet. You need a NEMA 5-20P outlet (the one with the horizontal blade slot) on a dedicated 20-amp circuit. Most modern shops have at least one 20-amp circuit.
Why pay more for the 18″ vs. the 16″?
Two reasons: (1) larger 18″ x 22″ element covers bigger prints, and (2) higher wattage (2,223W vs. 1,575W) means faster flash times even on smaller prints. If you print anything larger than 12″ wide, the 18″ pays for itself in production speed.
How does it compare to the Black Flash 18″?
Same heating element, fewer convenience features. No on/off switch, no indicator light, no 360° rotating head, 1-year warranty vs. 3-year. The Afford-A-Flash 18″ is $275 less than the Black Flash 18″. See comparison →
Can it cure plastisol fully?
It can, but it’ll take 60-90 seconds of dwell time per print — slow for production. The Afford-A-Flash is designed to gel between colors, not fully cure. For final cure, add a conveyor dryer.
How fast does this flash plastisol?
Flash time depends on ink color, deposit thickness, and heater height above the print. Typical flash times are 5-15 seconds for under-bases and 8-20 seconds for solid colors. Always temp-test your specific ink — flash temp is 240°F-260°F surface temperature for most plastisols, well below the 320°F full-cure temperature.
How long does shipping take?
Blackbody flash dryers drop-ship directly from BBC Industries in Pacific, MO — we don’t stock these at River City Supply. BBC typically has flash dryers in-stock for fast turnaround (1-2 weeks transit), but build queues can run 6-8 weeks during peak season. Free shipping in the continental U.S. on all flash dryers. Message us through the website chat or call before ordering for current BBC stock and build status.
What’s the difference between a flash dryer and a conveyor dryer?
A flash dryer (like this one) gels the ink between colors during printing — it doesn’t fully cure. A conveyor dryer fully cures the print at the end of the run. Most shops need both. See Blackbody conveyor dryers →
Do I need a flash dryer for every press station?
No — most shops use one flash dryer that swings over different stations as needed, or use the flash on an auto press triggered by the indexer. Multi-color prints with multiple white under-bases can benefit from a second flash, but most shops manage fine with one.
