Stop Smudging When Stacking

Hot ink is soft, tacky, and prone to transfer when garments pile up at the end of the dryer. The Air Bar cools each shirt the moment it exits the heat chamber — ink hardens, the fabric cools to a comfortable handling temperature, and your operators can stack or fold without gassing or smearing wet ink onto the next shirt.

Stop Ink Gassing, Ghosting & Dye Migration

⚠️ The Problem Every Screen Printer Knows

You pull 200 shirts off the dryer, they look perfect. You stack them in a box, ship them out — and two days later the customer calls. There’s a faint image of the print showing up on the back of every shirt in the stack. This is ghosting, caused by ink gassing and dye migration. It’s one of the most frustrating (and most preventable) failures in screen printing.

🔥 Peroxide Off-Gassing

Low-bleed and poly-white plastisol inks contain peroxides that gas out during curing. If the shirt is still hot when it hits the stack, those gases escape into the air space between shirts and transfer to the back of the next garment above it. Result: a faint “ghost” of your print appearing where it was never printed.

🧬 Polyester Dye Sublimation

Polyester is dyed with disperse dyes that sublimate (turn to gas) between 260°F and 340°F — the exact temperature range your dryer runs at to cure plastisol. When hot shirts stack, the trapped heat keeps dyes gaseous long enough for them to migrate into the ink of the shirt below, turning your white print pink on a red polyester shirt.

The worst part: dye migration often doesn’t show up for 24–48 hours. Shirts come off the dryer looking perfect, get boxed up hot, and by the time they arrive at the customer the damage is done. It’s invisible at QC and catastrophic at delivery.

Cool the Shirts Before They Stack

Every major ink manufacturer — FN-Ink, ScreenPrinting.com, Monarch, Rutland — gives the same advice for preventing gassing and ghosting: don’t stack hot shirts. Get the garment temperature down before it hits the pile. A fan at the end of the dryer is the standard recommendation.

That’s exactly what the Vastex Conveyor Air Bar does — but with uniform, purpose-built airflow across the full belt width, not a shop fan duct-taped to a pole. 5 to 12 tightly-spaced fans drop the garment surface temperature fast enough that by the time the shirt reaches the catch table, the peroxides have finished gassing, the dye has locked back into the fiber, and you can stack without fear of ghost images showing up 48 hours later.

Who Gets Hit Hardest by Ink Gassing & Dye Migration:

  • Red, maroon, navy, or any bright polyester. The classic disaster — your bright white print slowly turns pink over 24–48 hours as polyester dyes sublimate and migrate into the ink.
  • 50/50 and tri-blend garments. Even 10% polyester content is enough for visible dye migration on prints that aren’t cooled fast enough.
  • Sublimated or camo-printed polyester. These already have disperse dyes sitting on the surface — they’ll re-release instantly when reheated. Cooling immediately after the dryer is non-negotiable.
  • Any garment printed with low-bleed or poly-white plastisol. The peroxides in these inks continue gassing for minutes after the shirt exits the dryer. Stack hot and you’ll ghost.
  • Performance wear, activewear, and safety neons. The worst offenders — these fabrics are engineered for colorfastness in water but not against heat-induced sublimation.
  • Hoodies and heavyweight garments. Thick fabric holds heat longer than tees. A hoodie can stay above 180°F for 5+ minutes after exiting the dryer — plenty of time for dye and ink gases to migrate.

The air bar attaches to the OUTSIDE of your dryer conveyor frame, so measure the outside conveyor width — not the belt width. CAB-30 fits 33–39″ outside; CAB-54 fits 57–63″ outside.

What does the Conveyor Air Bar actually do?
It mounts to the exit end of your conveyor dryer and uses 5 or 9 tightly-spaced mini fans to rapidly cool printed garments as they come off the belt. Cooling the ink right out of the dryer prevents smudging when garments stack, stops ink transfer between shirts, and lets your operators handle finished garments immediately without waiting for them to cool naturally.
Does this help prevent ink gassing and ghosting?
Yes — this is one of the main reasons to own an Air Bar. When hot shirts stack at the end of the dryer, peroxides in low-bleed and poly-white plastisol inks continue to off-gas, and polyester dyes (which sublimate between 260°F and 340°F) stay gaseous long enough to migrate into the next shirt in the pile. That’s what causes the ghost image of your print appearing on the back of the shirt stacked above it. The Air Bar drops the garment surface temperature fast enough that gassing completes before shirts touch, preventing the ghosting problem entirely.
What is dye migration and how does the Air Bar prevent it?
Dye migration is when dye from a polyester (or poly-blend) shirt turns to gas under the heat of the dryer and migrates INTO your printed ink, discoloring it over 24–48 hours. White prints on red polyester turn pink; white on navy turns blue. The Air Bar doesn’t prevent dye migration during curing itself — that takes proper ink selection (low-cure plastisol, blocker bases) and controlled cure temps. But it DOES prevent the second and often-ignored cause: heat-induced migration after stacking. When hot shirts stack, residual heat keeps dyes sublimating for several more minutes, making migration worse. Cool the shirts immediately with the Air Bar and you stop the post-dryer migration dead.
Will it fit my dryer if I don’t have a Vastex?
Most likely yes. CAB-30 fits any dryer with an outside conveyor width of 33″–39″ (not the belt width — the outside frame width). CAB-54 fits 57″–63″. This covers most BBC, Interchange, ROQ, older M&R, and other major-brand dryers. If you’re unsure, call us with your dryer’s make/model and we’ll confirm fit before you order.
How do I know if I need the CAB-30 or CAB-54?
It’s determined by your dryer’s belt width. If you have a 30″-belt Vastex (LittleRed X1-30, EconoRed II-30, BigRed 4D-V30, etc.) → CAB-30. If you have a 54″-belt Vastex (EconoRed III-54, BigRed 4D-V54, etc.) → CAB-54. For non-Vastex dryers, measure the outside conveyor width and match to the ranges above.
Should I get 120V or 240V?
Choose whichever matches the outlet nearest your dryer’s exit end. CAB-30-120 and CAB-54-120 plug into a standard 120V outlet (the same one you plug your coffee maker into). CAB-30-240 and CAB-54-240 require a dedicated 240V receptacle — which you may already have near a 240V dryer. Most shops go with 120V unless there’s a good reason to use 240V.
Does it blow cool air back into the dryer?
No. The bar is intentionally angled outward so cool air flows onto garments exiting the dryer without disturbing the heating chamber’s curing temperature. Your dryer’s PID controller doesn’t have to fight the air bar, and your cure stays stable.
Will it work with bulky garments like hoodies?
Yes. The bar is height-adjustable, so you raise it for thick sweatshirts, hoodies, pads, and bulky items, and lower it for thin tees and performance fabric. One air bar handles every garment type in your shop.
Do I need to wire it into my dryer?
No. The Conveyor Air Bar has its own independent power cord — it plugs directly into a wall outlet (120V or 240V depending on the model you choose). No interruption to your dryer’s electrical, no electrician required.
Does it work for DTG and DTF prints too?
Yes. Cool airflow is useful for any printed garment leaving a dryer or flash — plastisol, water-based, discharge, DTG digital, and DTF transfers. Shops running DTG especially benefit since pretreatment and white-ink prints can stay warm and tacky longer than plastisol.
Can I add it to a dryer I bought years ago?
Yes — the Air Bar is a retrofit accessory. It mounts to the outside of most existing Vastex and competitor dryers without modifications to the dryer itself. If your dryer is unusual, send us a photo of the exit end and we’ll confirm fit.
