What Is a Bobbin — And Why Does Quality Matter?

A bobbin is the small spool that holds the bottom thread in your embroidery machine. As the top thread (your Exquisite 1000m polyester or whatever color you’re stitching) passes through the fabric, it interlocks with the bobbin thread on the back side of the design — creating the lockstitch that makes the embroidery hold together. How to Install Prewound Bobbins

1️⃣ Load the Bobbin Case

Place the bobbin into your machine’s bobbin case with the thread feeding in the direction your manual specifies. Prewound bobbins drop in without any winding step.

2️⃣ Thread the Tension Spring

Pull the bobbin thread through the tension slot or spring on the bobbin case according to your machine’s threading diagram. Proper tension setting is critical.

3️⃣ Insert Into Machine

Insert the threaded bobbin case into the machine’s rotary hook or shuttle race. Listen for the click that confirms proper seating.

4️⃣ Test Stitch Quality

The 24-tube is for shops that want to try Steady Stitch quality before committing to a full box, or for low-volume operations where 144 bobbins would last too long in inventory. The 144-count bulk box has significantly better per-bobbin pricing, paying back its cost difference quickly through per-piece savings. For high-volume Style M production, the bulk box is the right choice; for occasional use or trial, the 24-tube is more practical.

Should I use white or black bobbin thread?

White for most embroidery, black for dark garments. The bobbin thread shows on the back of every embroidered piece — and depending on tension, can sometimes peek through on the front, especially on stretched or thin fabric. White bobbin thread is invisible behind most embroidery on light-to-medium garments. Black bobbin thread is essential for embroidery on dark garments (black t-shirts, dark uniforms, navy jackets) where white bobbin thread can show through as a visible white line behind the design.

Will these bobbins fit my embroidery machine?

If your machine uses the standard commercial Style L bobbin (Tajima, Brother, Barudan, Melco, Ricoma, SWF, Happy, Baby Lock, Janome MB, Toyota, and most other multi-needle commercial systems), yes — our Style L bobbins fit. If your machine uses Style M (some specialty commercial machines), make sure to buy our Style M version instead. Confirm your machine’s required bobbin size in the machine manual before ordering.

How many bobbins do I need to keep on hand?

Rule of thumb: stock enough bobbins to keep production running between order cycles plus a reasonable safety buffer. Most production shops use 24-36 bobbins per machine per week at typical volume. For a single-machine shop running 5 days a week, a 144-count box typically lasts 4-6 weeks. Multi-machine shops scale accordingly. Buying in 144-count quantities also delivers better per-bobbin pricing than smaller packs.

What thread weight should I use on the bobbin?

Our Steady Stitch bobbins are wound with quality polyester bobbin thread engineered specifically for commercial embroidery machines. The polyester construction holds tension at high stitching speeds without breaking. We don’t recommend trying to wind cotton or rayon thread for bobbin use — neither holds tension as well as polyester, and both are more prone to breaks at production speed.

How do I install a prewound bobbin?

Prewound bobbins drop directly into your machine’s bobbin case the same way self-wound bobbins do — there’s no special installation. Place the bobbin in the case with thread feeding in the direction your machine manual specifies, thread it through the tension spring, and insert the bobbin case into the machine. Always run a test stitch on scrap fabric to confirm tension is balanced before starting production.

How should I store unused bobbins?

Store bobbins in their original box or tube, in a cool dry location away from humidity and direct sunlight. Bobbin thread is durable and has no real shelf-life concern under normal shop conditions — bobbins purchased a year ago will work the same as fresh stock. For paper-sided bobbins, avoid stacking heavy items on top of stored boxes (paper flanges can crush). Plastic-sided bobbins are more forgiving in storage.
