Tearaway backing is a temporary embroidery stabilizer that holds your fabric still during stitching, then tears away cleanly from around the design when you’re done. Unlike cutaway backing (which stays in the garment permanently), tearaway leaves no backing in the finished piece — just clean stitches and a finished look that feels exactly like the original fabric.

Use tearaway (not cutaway) when:

• The fabric is stable woven — twill, denim, canvas, oxford, button-up shirts
• The design has a light-to-medium stitch count (under about 8,000 stitches)
• You want a clean finish with no permanent backing in the garment
• You’re embroidering jackets, caps, dress shirts, tote bags, or other woven goods
• Production speed matters — tearaway is faster to finish than cutaway

Do NOT use tearaway on knits, jerseys, polos, performance wear, or any stretch fabric — those need permanent cutaway support to prevent the design from distorting over time. For cap embroidery specifically, see our cap backing lineup engineered for finished cap work.

Same 1.8 oz Firm Tearaway as our pre-cut sheets, but on a 20-inch continuous roll that you cut to your needed sheet size. For high-volume shops, rolls cost less per square inch than pre-cut sheets and let you cut to your exact hoop and design size without waste. The trade-off is the extra cutting step in your workflow — worth it for production volume, overkill for low-volume shops. The everyday production standard in roll format.
