FDC Films

FDC Lumina® 4200 Matte Black (Color #040) is a premium 24″ intermediate-grade non-gloss calendered PVC sign vinyl with a flat, light-absorbing matte finish that brings stealth, sophistication, and premium restraint to every project it enters. At 2.8 mil with a permanent acrylic adhesive, Matte Black cuts cleanly, weeds precisely, and bonds firmly to flat surfaces and simple curves. This is the finish that motorsports brands, blackout vehicle graphics, premium product identity, industrial equipment labeling, and upscale architectural signage choose when gloss would feel too loud — and when the absence of shine is itself the statement. Description

Flat, Stealthy, and Impossible to Overlook

Matte Black #040 is the anti-gloss — the finish that premium car culture, industrial design, and modern architectural signage reach for when they want black to feel deliberate and refined rather than reflective and obvious. No shine, no reflection, no compromise.

True Flat Matte Non-Gloss Finish

Color #040 is a pure, light-absorbing matte black — no sheen, no gloss, no reflection. The finish that motorsports culture celebrates, premium product brands use to signal quality through restraint, and architectural signage chooses when gloss feels industrial and matte feels intentional.

Stealth Aesthetic Across Every Application

Matte Black brings a stealth quality to vehicle graphics, tool labeling, equipment panels, and architectural signage that high-gloss black simply cannot replicate. The flat finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it — giving graphics a presence that reads as premium before anything else registers.

Permanent Bond in Demanding Environments

The clear permanent acrylic adhesive cures to 2.5 lbs/in after 24 hours — holding on motorsport vehicle panels through heat and vibration, equipment labels through industrial environments, and architectural signage through outdoor weather cycles year after year.

5-Year Outdoor Performance

Rated up to 5 years outdoors under vertical exposure. The matte finish is UV-stabilized and holds its flat, non-reflective character — no yellowing, no gloss creep, no change in the flat character that made it the right choice on day one.

How to Apply — Step by Step

1Design & Cut

Set cutter force to 40–60g and run a test cut before production. Use a fresh blade for cleanest results.

2Weed the Vinyl

Weed excess vinyl with a weeding hook. FDC 4200’s cast-like flexibility handles fine detail without tearing neighboring cuts.

3Apply Transfer Tape

Apply your 24″ application tape over the weeded design. Squeegee firmly from center out to bond tape to the vinyl face.

4Prep the Surface

Clean with 70% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Allow to dry completely. Surface must be at or above 40°F.

5Squeegee & Reveal

Position the design, squeegee from center outward to eliminate air pockets, then peel transfer tape at a low angle. Allow 24 hours to cure.

You’ll Also Need: Application Tape

Matte vinyl requires paper application tape only. Clear film tape’s finger-tack adhesive leaves permanent marks on matte surfaces and must never be used on matte vinyl.

PC-24 Paper Application Tape — 24″

The only correct transfer tape for matte vinyl — paper tape lifts and releases without leaving adhesive marks that clear film tape would cause.

Where Matte Black Sign Vinyl Works Best

Motorsports & Performance Vehicle GraphicsRace number plates, hood decals, blackout trim graphics, door lettering, and performance brand identification — matte black is the signature finish of motorsport culture.
Blackout & De-Chrome Vehicle GraphicsChrome delete graphics, badge blackout, emblem overlay, and trim blackout packages — Matte Black is the go-to for the automotive blackout aesthetic that premium vehicle customization depends on.
Industrial Equipment Labeling & SafetyEquipment identification panels, machinery labels, electrical panel identification, and industrial brand graphics — Matte Black’s non-reflective finish is practical where gloss creates distracting glare.
Premium Architectural & Interior Brand SignageModern office identity systems, restaurant interior brand graphics, and retail architectural signage — Matte Black brings the sophistication that premium interior design environments demand.

Compatible Surfaces & Best Pairings

Matte Black reads powerfully against brushed aluminum, stainless steel, painted metal, automotive finishes, and glass. Effective on chrome and satin-finished vehicle surfaces for blackout packages. Works on all standard sign vinyl substrates.

Pro Application Tips

  • ALWAYS use a felt-edge or fabric squeegee — hard plastic creates burnish marks on matte surfaces that cannot be repaired
  • Avoid touching the matte face with bare hands — fingerprints and skin oils show prominently on dark matte vinyl
  • Paper tape only — clear film tape finger-tack leaves marks on matte black that will not disappear
  • Fresh blade critical — matte vinyl shows blade drag artifacts at certain viewing angles
  • Store rolls away from direct sunlight — UV exposure during storage can affect matte finish character

⚠ Felt-Edge Squeegee is MandatoryHard plastic squeegees permanently alter the matte finish character on Matte Black vinyl, creating visible burnish marks and uneven sheen. A felt-edge or fabric-wrapped squeegee is not optional — it is required for every Matte Black application without exception.
⚠ Fingerprints Show on Matte Dark SurfacesSkin oils and fingerprints show prominently on dark matte vinyl. Handle Matte Black from the liner side or with clean gloves during weeding and application. The matte face is unforgiving of contamination during the transfer process.
⚠ Paper Tape Only — No Clear Film TapeClear film application tape’s finger-tack adhesive leaves marks on matte black surfaces. PC-24 paper tape is the correct transfer medium. Using clear film tape on matte black is a common mistake that ruins the finish before the graphic is even applied.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions — FDC 4200 Matte Black Sign Vinyl

What is the difference between Matte Black #040 and a standard gloss black sign vinyl?

The finish is the entire story. Matte Black #040 has a flat, light-absorbing non-reflective surface that reads as stealth and premium. Gloss black is reflective and high-sheen. For motorsport blackout packages and modern architectural signage, matte is the intentional choice — gloss would undermine the aesthetic entirely.

Can I use a regular hard plastic squeegee on Matte Black vinyl?

No — this is one of the most important rules for matte vinyl. Hard plastic squeegees create permanent burnish marks and localized sheen changes on matte surfaces. A felt-edge or fabric-wrapped squeegee is mandatory for every Matte Black application. There are no exceptions.

What application tape should I use with Matte Black?

PC-24 paper application tape is the correct choice. Clear film tape’s finger-tack adhesive leaves marks on matte surfaces that compromise the finish. Paper tape lifts and releases cleanly from the matte face without leaving adhesive residue. This is non-negotiable for a professional result.

Is FDC 4200 Matte Black good for vehicle chrome delete and blackout packages?

Yes — it’s one of the primary applications. Matte Black adheres well to chrome, painted metal, and body-color surfaces when thoroughly IPA-cleaned. Not a conformable cast vinyl — door recesses and compound curves require cast matte film.

Does the matte finish hold up outdoors without becoming glossy over time?

FDC 4200 Matte Black is UV-stabilized to maintain its flat finish character. It does not develop gloss creep under normal outdoor exposure. Keep the surface clean with non-abrasive cleaners — harsh scrubbing and abrasive products can burnish matte surfaces over time.

Can Matte Black be used for industrial equipment labels and panel graphics?

Yes — Matte Black is practical in industrial environments where gloss creates distracting glare under shop lighting. It adheres to painted metal, aluminum, ABS plastic, and powder-coated equipment surfaces. Thorough IPA prep removes industrial oils and cutting fluid contamination.

How should I handle Matte Black vinyl to avoid fingerprints during application?

Handle the matte face as little as possible. Weed from the liner side where possible. Wear clean cotton or nitrile gloves during the transfer process. If the matte face must be touched, use a clean lint-free cloth to gently remove oils before applying transfer tape.
