How Retroreflection Works

☀️ Normal Lighting (Day or Indoor)

The print reads as a standard, vivid color in the chosen hue. The reflective glass beads are invisible — the print looks exactly like any other water-based color print. Customers see the design; the reflective capability is hidden.

🌙 Direct Light in Low-Light (Night / Dark)

When a headlight, flashlight, or camera flash strikes the surface, the glass microsphere beads refract and return that light directly back toward the source with powerful intensity — the same physics as highway signage and safety vests. Visible from hundreds of feet away.

⚠️ Three Rules That Cannot Be Broken — They Eliminate Reflectivity

Printing Instructions

1Stir Thoroughly Before Use
Glass microsphere beads are heavier than standard pigment and settle to the bottom during storage. Stir thoroughly before every print session and re-agitate periodically during long production runs to keep beads evenly distributed. Keep lids on containers when not actively printing.
2Emulsion
Use a water-resistant emulsion — dual-cure or SBQ (pure photopolymer) recommended. Standard water-soluble emulsions will break down when exposed to water-based inks and cause premature stencil failure during the run.
3Mesh Count
Use 110–180 mesh. For maximum retroreflective intensity: single pass at 110 mesh. Coarser mesh allows more glass beads to transfer to the garment, directly increasing reflective performance. Finer mesh (up to 180) works for detail work but reduces bead deposit and reflective output. For safety and hi-vis applications, 110 mesh is strongly recommended.
4Direct Print Only — No Underbase
⚠️ Do NOT use an underbase. Print HS Series directly onto bare garment fabric. An underbase creates an opaque barrier between the glass beads and the fabric that eliminates retroreflective performance. This rule applies regardless of garment color — even dark garments must be printed direct, not over white.
5No Flash Between Passes
⚠️ Do NOT flash between passes. Flashing creates a semi-cured surface layer that prevents subsequent bead deposits from adhering correctly. If additional ink deposit is needed, print wet-on-wet without any intermediate flash.
6Squeegee
Medium flood with moderate squeegee pressure. Avoid excessive downward pressure — heavy pressure can shear or crush glass beads in the stencil opening and reduce retroreflective performance.
7Curing — Standard (Cotton/Blends)
Cure at 340°F (170°C) for 120–180 seconds through a forced-air conveyor dryer. ⚠️ This is higher than standard water-based cure temperatures — always verify dryer temperature with a donut probe before production. Always wash test before full production.
8Curing — With AG-CLA100 (Synthetics)
When AG-CLA100 is used, cure at 280°F (138°C). The lower temperature is required for heat-sensitive synthetic and performance fabrics. Add AG-CLA100 at 1.5% by weight for polyester, nylon, Lycra, and spandex.
9Test Reflective Performance
Take the cured garment into a dark room. From approximately 10 feet away, hold a flashlight between your eyes and shine it at the print. The ink will reflect light directly back toward you — this replicates how the print appears to a driver seeing a pedestrian in vehicle headlights. Always conduct a wash test before committing to full production.
10Cleanup
Water and degreaser — no harsh solvents required. Remove ink from screens immediately after printing. If ink dries on the screen, use a water-based ink cleaner or reclaimer.
