⚠️ How to Embroider With Metallic Thread Successfully

Metallic thread is more demanding than standard polyester — most failed metallic jobs are caused by using the wrong needle and running the machine too fast. Read this before starting:

🪡 Use a Larger Needle

Step up to a 80/12 or 90/14 chrome needle (vs the standard 75/11 used for normal embroidery). The larger eye reduces thread friction and prevents the metallic foil from shredding at the needle eye.

🐢 Slow the Machine Speed

Drop machine speed by 20-30% from your standard production setting. Metallic thread can’t handle the heat and friction of full-speed stitching — slowing down prevents the thread from breaking and the foil from melting.

⚙️ Reduce Top Tension

Lower your top tension slightly from your standard polyester setting. Less tension means less stress on the metallic foil wrap, which means fewer thread breaks and cleaner stitches.

🧵 Use a Thread Stand

If your machine supports it, run metallic thread off a vertical thread stand (instead of the standard horizontal spool holder). This lets the thread unwind smoothly without twisting — twist is the #1 cause of metallic thread breaks.

Why does metallic thread break more than regular embroidery thread?

Metallic thread is more fragile than polyester — the metallic foil wrap is what gives it the brilliant shine, but the wrap can shred or break under high friction, heat, and tension. The vast majority of metallic thread breaks come from three causes: (1) using a needle that’s too small (the foil shreds at the needle eye), (2) running the machine too fast (heat melts the foil), and (3) too much top tension (the foil snaps under stress). Switch to a larger 80/12 or 90/14 needle, drop machine speed 20-30%, and reduce top tension. Most “metallic thread doesn’t work” problems disappear with those three changes.

Should I use metallic for the whole design or just accents?

Accents only. Metallic thread is more expensive than standard polyester, slower to stitch (you have to drop machine speed), and harder on machines. Reserving it for the standout details — sports team names, championship lettering, premium logo accents, holiday decorative elements — is what makes the brilliant metallic shine impactful. If everything is metallic, nothing stands out. For bulk fills and main design areas, use standard Exquisite polyester thread.

What’s the difference between Silver, Gold, Copper, and the brights?

Foundation metallics (Silver, Gold, Copper, Aluminum) are the classic shades used for awards, championships, premium branding, and traditional designs — these are the metallics you stock first. Brights (Pacific Blue, Dark Blue, Aqua, Turquoise, Red, Carnation Pink, Green, Pale Green, Lavender) are for team color matching, fashion designs, holiday work, and contemporary brand designs. Most shops stock the foundation metallics in volume and the brights in smaller quantities as needed for specific jobs. See the comparison table above for the full color lineup.

How many gold shades are available?

Three. Gold MG3 is the standard classic gold tone. Gold 2 MG3 is an alternate gold shade (slightly different hue). Gold 3 MG2 is the third gold tone. For most embroidery jobs, one gold is enough — choose the one that matches your brand or design specs. For heraldic crests, layered emblems, and premium logos requiring multiple gold gradations for depth, the full three-gold combination delivers the dimensional look that single-gold designs can’t achieve.

Does metallic thread wash and wear well?

Yes — KingStar metallic thread is machine washable and dry cleanable. Do NOT bleach. The polyester core gives the thread structural strength while the metallic foil wrap provides the reflective shine. Properly stitched and properly cared for, metallic embroidery holds its shine through the typical garment wear cycle. For best longevity, machine wash in cold water and avoid harsh detergents that could degrade the metallic foil over time.

Can I use metallic thread on dark or black garments?

Yes — and metallic thread arguably shines brightest on dark garments because the metallic shine contrasts dramatically against the dark background. Sports team lettering on dark jerseys, premium logos on black corporate apparel, holiday designs on dark seasonal garments all use metallic thread for that high-contrast premium look. Use the same machine technique adjustments regardless of garment color — larger needle, slower speed, reduced tension.

What bobbin thread should I use with metallic top thread?

Use white or black prewound polyester bobbins — same as your standard embroidery setup. White bobbin for most embroidery, black bobbin for dark garments to prevent show-through. The bobbin thread doesn’t need to be metallic; the visible top thread is what creates the metallic look. Using metallic in the bobbin would be wasteful and could cause additional thread breakage problems.

Will metallic thread work on my home embroidery machine?

Most home embroidery machines (Brother PR series, Baby Lock single-needle, Janome MB) handle metallic thread well as long as you make the technique adjustments — larger needle, slower speed, reduced tension. The DBxK5 needle system used by commercial machines fits most home embroidery machines too. If your machine has trouble with metallic thread, the most common cause is using too small a needle — try stepping up to 90/14 even if your normal stitching uses 75/11.

How long does one spool last?

Depends entirely on use. For accent work only (which is what metallic should be used for), one 1,000-meter spool typically handles dozens of garments — sometimes hundreds if the metallic portion of each design is small. If you’re using metallic for larger areas (which we don’t recommend, but some designs require it), expect the spool to last roughly the same as a standard polyester spool of similar size. For high-volume metallic accent production, buy multiple spools of your most-used colors (Silver, Gold MG3, Red, Pacific Blue) to avoid running out mid-run.
