Description

Make Your Embroidery Pop Off the Garment

3D puff embroidery is the technique behind those crisp, raised logos you see on premium caps and jackets — and it starts with the right foam. DIME 3D Embroidery Foam in 3mm gives you bold, dramatic height that turns flat stitching into eye-catching, tactile dimension. Lay it under your satin stitches, stitch, tear away the excess, and watch ordinary designs become showpieces that command premium pricing.

Bold 3mm Height

The 3mm thickness delivers a pronounced, dramatic raised effect — perfect for chunky lettering, caps, and logos that need to stand out. Want a subtler lift? Reach for the 2mm version.

Match Your Thread

Available in White, Black, Red, Navy, Royal, and Gray so the foam disappears under your stitches — no peeking edges, even on open or lower-density areas.

Clean Tear-Away

Dense satin stitches perforate the foam as they sew, so the excess pulls away cleanly once you’re done. A quick pass with a heat gun melts away any tiny remnants.

Premium Profit Maker

3D puff is a high-margin upsell. The same garment commands a higher price the moment your design lifts off the fabric — customers love the look and feel.

How to Use 3D Embroidery Foam

Digitize for foam. Use satin stitches with increased density (roughly 0.16–0.22 mm spacing) and add end caps so the foam stays buried under the thread.
Stitch your underlay first. Run any flat fill or underlay elements before pausing the machine for foam placement.
Place the foam. Cut a piece slightly larger than the puff area and float it on top of the design. A light mist of temporary spray adhesive or a small piece of tape keeps it from shifting.
Stitch the satin caps. Sew the dense satin layer over the foam. The needle penetrations perforate the foam as it goes.
Remove the excess. Gently tear the surrounding foam away, then briefly hit any leftover bits with a heat gun for a clean, finished edge.

Pro Tips for a Flawless Puff

Go Bold With Fonts

Thick, simple fonts and enclosed shapes (block letters, circles) puff best. Skip thin scripts and tiny detail — they don’t hold the foam.

Slow the Machine

Reduce machine speed for thicker foam — punching through 3mm cleanly takes a little more force and precision.

Test First

Always run a test on scrap fabric to dial in density and tension before stitching the final garment.

Why Embroiderers Love 3D Foam

Instant Premium Look

Raised lettering reads as high-end. The same cap design looks and sells like a premium product the moment it lifts off the fabric.

Easier Than It Looks

No special machine required. With the right density settings and a sheet of foam, even newer embroiderers get pro-level results.

Affordable to Try

Sold by the single sheet, so you can experiment with the technique and colors without committing to a big roll.

Versatile

Great on structured caps, beanies, jackets, hoodies, bags, and patches — anywhere you want a bold, dimensional statement.

3mm vs 2mm — Which Thickness?

FoamPuff HeightBest For
3mm (this sheet)Bold, dramatic liftCaps, chunky block lettering, large logos
2mm versionSubtle, lower-profile liftSmaller text, finer detail, gentle dimension

Complete the Project

Pair with water-soluble topping to keep stitches crisp on top of the foam, and a cutaway or tear-away backing for stability underneath.

No Adhesive Backing Needed

This is true puff foam — it isn’t a peel-and-stick sheet. Hold it in place with a light temporary spray or tape; the satin stitches lock it down.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does this foam have an adhesive backing?
No — this is true 3D puff foam, not a peel-and-stick sheet. You float it on top of your design and hold it in place with a light mist of temporary embroidery spray adhesive or a small piece of tape. The satin stitches lock it down as you sew, and the excess tears away afterward.
How do I remove the excess foam after stitching?
The needle perforates the foam as it stitches, so the surrounding foam tears away cleanly by hand. For any tiny bits left in tight corners, a quick pass with a heat gun shrinks them away for a clean, professional edge.
Should I choose 3mm or 2mm?
Use 3mm for a bold, dramatic raised effect — ideal for caps and chunky block lettering. Choose the 2mm version for a subtler lift on smaller text and finer detail.
Which color foam should I use?
Match the foam color to your thread so any foam peeking through the stitches disappears. We stock White, Black, Red, Navy, Royal, and Gray for exactly that reason.
What designs work best with 3D foam?
Bold, simple shapes and thick fonts puff the best — block lettering, enclosed shapes, and larger logos. Thin scripts and tiny detail don’t hold the foam well, so keep puff areas chunky.
Can I use it on caps and is it washable?
Yes — caps and structured hats are the most popular use. Finished foam embroidery is washable; for the longest-lasting puff, gentle washing and air drying are recommended.
How fast does it ship?
In-stock orders placed before 3:30 PM CT ship the same day. Orders over $200 ship free, and local customers can choose free in-store pickup at our San Antonio location.
